GLENDALE, ARIZONA – Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired goaltender Marc Cheverie from the Florida Panthers in exchange for center Justin Bernhardt.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Cheverie split the 2010-11 season between the Cincinnati Cyclones of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL). The 24-year-old native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia appeared in 30 games with Cincinnati posting a 13-9-5 record with three shutouts and a 3.11 goals against average (GAA). In 15 games with Rochester, Cheverie posted a record of 2-7-1 with a 3.91 GAA.
Cheverie spent three seasons with the University of Denver (2007-10), playing in 80 regular season games, posting a record of 48-18-8. He led the Pioneers to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2008-2010. Cheverie was selected by the Panthers in the seventh round (193rd overall) of the 2006 Entry Draft.
Bernhardt appeared in 47 games for the Las Vegas Wranglers (ECHL) in 2010-11, recording 6-19-25 and 29 PIM. He signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Coyotes on April 13, 2009.

Tragedy Strikes Hockey, Touches Florida Panthers ... Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins and Alexander Karpovtsev Die in Russian Plane Crash
Tragedy struck the hockey community on Wednesday after a charter jet crashed during takeoff from Yaroslavl, Russia.
The plane was carrying the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv team from the Kontinental Hockey League to its season-opener in Minsk, Belarus.
Russian officials said there are just two survivors – a flight engineer and 26-year-old winger Alexander Galimov. Both are in critical condition at a local hospital with severe burns.
Russian website sovsport.ru reports three of the dead include former members of the Florida Panthers: Defensmen Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins and Alexander Karpovtsev. The Latvian embassy confirmed Skrastins' death.
“This is a horrible day for hockey,'' Panthers general manager Dale Tallon. “Our hearts just go out to their families.''
Russian officials said 45 people were aboard the Yak-42 airliner – 37 team members and eight crew members. Those who died include former Red Wings assistant coach Brad McCrimmon and three-time NHL All-Star Pavol Demitra.
The plane crashed on the banks of the Volga River after failing to gain altitude on take off. Yaroslavl is about 150 miles northeast of Moscow.
“First we did not want to believe. But now there is no hope," Lokomotiv spokesman Vladimir Malkov said. “Our team is gone.''
International Ice Hockey Federation president Rene Fasel was quoted on the KHL website as saying Wednesday was "the darkest day in the history of our sport. This is not only a Russian tragedy, the Lokomotiv roster included players and coaches from ten nations.”
Wednesday's crash is one of the worst in sports history and is reminiscent of the Nov. 14, 1970 crash that involved the Marshall University football team and claimed 75 lives.
Salei and Skrastins did not play together with the Panthers, although their paths did cross. Salei, who played in 147 games with the Panthers over parts of two seasons, was traded to Colorado in February 2008. The Panthers got Skrastins in return.
Skrastins, 36, spent part of two seasons with the Panthers, playing in 97 games for Florida before leaving for Dallas in 2009. Skrastins played for the Dallas Stars last season; Salei, 35, spent last season with the Red Wings.
Karpovtsev, 41, played in six games for the Panthers in 2005 before being released. He was an assistant coach for Lokomotiv and a member of the New York Rangers 1994 Stanley Cup championship team.

How it ended: The Panthers closed the season with a 1-0 win against Washington, the team with the best record in the conference, but it also snapped a 10-game winless streak.

WATCH ›Offseason changes: No team overhauled their roster like the Panthers, who added 10 new players, including seven on the first day of free agency. There's a new top defense pairing in Brian Campbell and Ed Jovanovski. Scottie Upshall, Tomas Fleischmann and Sean Bergenheim were signed to add offense, along with Kris Versteeg and Tomas Kopecky, who were acquired in trades. Matt Bradley and Marcel Goc also were signed to add depth up front. And when GM Dale Tallon couldn't re-sign goalie Tomas Vokoun, he added Jose Theodore as his replacement. Add to those new faces Kevin Dineen, who was hired as coach in May. The team also drafted high-scoring center Jonathan Huberdeau with the third pick of last month's draft, and could insert him into the opening-day lineup. Another first-round pick, defenseman Erik Gudbranson, the third pick of the 2010 draft, likely will play a top-four role this season.
Why they could get in: The core the Panthers had been going with wasn't working, but this new one could. Tallon brought in three Stanley Cup winners from his time in Chicago (Versteeg, Kopecky, Campbell) and Upshall, Jovanovski, Bradley and Bergenheim all have played deep into the playoffs. The top four defensemen look solid in Jovanovski, Campbell, Dmitry Kulikov and Gudbranson. Theodore and Scott Clemmensen could form a solid duo in net, with top prospect Jacob Markstrom waiting in the wings. With Upshall, Versteeg and Fleischmann, plus holdovers David Booth, Mike Santorelli and Stephen Weiss, the potential is there for as many as six 20-goal scorers. It took three seasons for Tallon to build the Blackhawks into a playoff team; he might not need as much time in Florida.

Panthers Agree to One-Year Contract with D Michael Caruso
Caruso, 23, played in 75 games for the Rochester Americans (AHL) last season, scoring five goals with four assists and 77 PIM. For his career in the American Hockey league, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman has recorded 30 points (7-23-30) and 185 penalty minutes in 215 AHL games.
The Mississauga, Ontario, native was drafted by Florida in the fourth round (103rd overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

ST. PAUL – Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has acquired D Brian Campbell from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for LW Rostislav Olesz.
“Brian is a top-four, mobile, puck-moving defenseman who we are very pleased to have acquired,” said Tallon. “He is a hard working and responsible player, who will be counted on to play an important role on our power play. We look forward to his immediate contribution to our club.”
Campbell, 32, has played in 626 National Hockey League games for Buffalo (2001-08), San Jose (2007-08) and Chicago (2008-11) scoring 54 goals with 258 assists, 167 PIM and a plus-53 rating. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman won a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2009-10 season, assisting on the game-winning goal in game six of the 2010 Stanley Cup finals. Campbell has played in 90 postseason games registering 38 points (8-30-38), appearing in the playoffs in six of his last seven seasons.
The Strathroy, Ontario native recorded a career best 52 points (7-45-52) with Chicago during the 2008-09 campaign. The two-time NHL All-Star (2007 & 2008) was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the sixth round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
