The Florida Panthers have canceled what would have been their third annual rookie camp and tournament.
The camp, according to the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, was to include rookies from the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins and was to be held from Sept. 15-19 at Saveology.com Iceplex. The tournament included the Panthers, Nashville Predators and Lightning last year.

According to DobberHockey.com, the Weiss-Versteeg-Fleischmann trio totaled 108 points, ahead of Toronto's Bozak-Kessel-Lupul line (106 points), Montreal's Cole-Desharnais-Pacioretty trio (105), Detroit's Filppula-Hudler-Zetterberg (104), and Pittsburgh's Malkin-Neal-Kunitz (104).

The Panthers are set to open the 2012-13 season Oct. 13 against the Tampa Bay Lightning and will raise a Southeast Division Championship banner in a pre-game ceremony.

Can the Panthers build on their first playoff berth in 12 years?
Coach Kevin Dineen did wonders with the Panthers last season, taking a group replete with new parts and shaping it into a team that won the first division title in franchise history and ended a playoff drought that stretched to 2000. But Florida lost its first-round series to the New Jersey Devils in seven games after taking a 3-2 lead, and with the teams behind them improving, the Panthers will be hard-pressed to take the next step after mostly standing pat this summer.

Returning to Iowa always brings back memories for Clemmensen, who is still to this day the only NHL player born in Iowa. He hopes to be an inspiration for all those playing hockey in his home state.
“It’s [being the only Iowa born player in the NHL] definitely something that I’m proud of and take pride in and I hope that I can inspire and serve as a role model and an example of making it at the highest level,” he said.

2011-2012: 1st in Southeast Division, 3rd in Eastern Conference
Key Additions: While the Panthers were not as active in Free Agency as they were last season, they still managed to make some moves this offseason. The key acquisitions for the Panthers were forward Peter Mueller and defenseman Filip Kuba.
Mueller, an offensively gifted forward who has suffered through some injuries early on in his career, has played the past two years for the Colorado Avalanche. This past season Mueller played in 32 games and totaled 16 points (seven goals, nine assists). His best season in the NHL was in his first year with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2007-2008 when the former first rounder totaled 54 points in 81 games.
Kuba will be making a return to the team that drafted him. Kuba has played the last two seasons for the Ottawa Senators and last season he had one of his better years in the NHL, scoring 32 points (six goals, 26 assists) in 73 games as he helped fellow blueliner Erik Karlsson win the Norris Trophy (given to league's Best Defenseman).
Other Additions: F George Parros, C/RW Casey Wellman, F Jean-Francois Jacques, C Andre Deveaux.
Key Loss: The Panthers had a couple of big losses this offseason but no one more than the loss of defenseman Jason Garrison. Garrison will undoubtedly be missed as he had the highest player rating and had the most power play goals on the team last season. His heavy shot from the point, especially on the man advantage, earned him the most goals (16) by a defenseman in franchise history. The Panthers are hoping that Kuba can fill the void.
Other Losses: F Mikael Samuelsson, F Wojtek Wolski, D Krys Barch, F Bracken Kearns, F Jonathan Matsumoto
Key Keep: As bad as it was losing Garrison, re-signing F Kris Versteeg was a huge move in the right direction. Versteeg was second on the team with five game winning goals and 23 total goals. His career-high contributions were instrumental in the Panthers push for the playoffs and they will continue to see that for at least the next four seasons.
Other Keeps: G Scott Clemmensen, G Brian Foster, D Michael Caruso, C James Wright, D Keaton Ellerby

Every summer, he holds his “Defense First” camp in Toronto and Michigan. It makes sense that the “defensive defenseman” would try and help teach the basics of defense to kids at a young age.
Weaver’s camp in Toronto runs for two weeks, while the one in Michigan runs for one week. Both camps are split into two groups, standard and elite. Along with running the camps, Weaver is also enjoying the time off with his family in Toronto since he doesn’t get to see them very often while in season.

Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to a four-year contract with RW Kris Versteeg.
"Kris played an important role in our club’s success last season and we are pleased to have reached a long-term contract agreement with him,” said Tallon. “He is a skilled player who recorded career highs in goals and points last season, while playing on our top line alongside Stephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischmann. We look forward to his continued offensive production, as well as his off-ice contributions in the South Florida community.”
Versteeg, 26, recorded career bests in goals (23) and points (54) while playing in 71 games for the Panthers last season. He set a Florida franchise record tallying 25 points (11-14-25) in his first 20 games played with the Panthers, including recording his first career hat trick on Nov. 10 at Winnipeg. Versteeg played in all seven of Florida’s post season contests recording three goals with two assists.
For his career in the National Hockey League, the Lethbridge, Alta, native has scored 88 goals with 201 points in 321 career games with Chicago (2007-2010), Toronto (2010-2011), Philadelphia (2010-2011) and Florida (2011-2012). In 57 post season games, he has recorded 14 goals and 37 points, while winning the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010.
Versteeg was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a conditional second round draft pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, as well as a third round selection in the 2012 draft.

The Panthers have elite prospects and plenty of them. The offensive-minded Huberdeau (Saint John-QMJHL) heads up a list of players who have a chance to make an impact in the near future. Fellow forwards Quinton Howden (Moose Jaw-WHL) and Nick Bjugstad (Minnesota-NCAA) are joined by defensemen Alex Petrovic (RD-WHL) and Michael Matheson (Dubuque-USHL) -- this year's first-round selection -- to form a quality group of up-and-coming talents.
I imagine Huberdeau will stick in the NHL this season, while the rest of this group will marinate for another season.
Sleeper Prospect: Alexander Delnov, LW, (RUS) (fourth round/2012)
His effort is first-rate and his talent is better than the average fourth-rounder. I can see him being a steal down the line.

Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has acquired C Casey Wellman from the New York Rangers in exchange for Florida’s fifth round selection in the 2014 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
“Casey is a young, highly skilled forward who adds more depth to our team,” said Tallon. “He can play both center and right wing and we feel he has the ability to play in a top line role within our team. We look forward to his contributions to our club.”
Wellman, 24, has played in 41 career NHL contests, all with Minnesota (2009-2012), registering 13 points (4-9-13). He appeared in 14 games with the Wild last year recording seven points (2-5-7) before being traded to New York on Feb. 3.
The Brentwood, CA native also split the year playing for both Houston (AHL) and Connecticut (AHL) scoring 23 goals with 24 assists in 57 games played. In nine Calder Cup playoff games with Connecticut, Wellman ranked tied for the club lead with nine points (4-5-9). He has played in 99 career AHL games for Houston (2010-2012) and Connecticut (2011-2012), scoring 37 goals with 82 points.
The 6-foot, 175-pound forward played two seasons (2008-2010) of college hockey at UMass-Amherst (Hockey East), ranking second on the club in overall point scoring each year.

It's not exactly a state secret that Roberto Luongo wants to go to Florida and in a perfect world, the Canucks would send him there. There's a bit of a stalemate now, as the Panthers feel Vancouver is asking too much and the Canucks feel Florida is squeezing too hard. One of the issues is prospects. Florida, which has done a great job stocking the system, is understandably unwilling to move Jacob Markstrom, Erik Gudbranson or Jonathan Huberdeau. An educated guess is that Vancouver has inquired about the "next level" of talented youth, like a Nick Bjugstad or Quinton Howden. Don't think Florida likes that, either. So, between that and the fact the Canucks don't want to take bad salary in return, things aren't really moving at this time.

Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with C James Wright. In addition, the club has agreed to one-year contracts with D Mike Caruso and G Brian Foster.
Wright, 22, appeared in 54 games for San Antonio (AHL) last season, recording 28 points (11-17-28) and 23 PIM after being acquired from Tampa Bay on Dec. 2, 2011, along with D Mike Vernace in exchange for D Mike Kostka and D Evan Oberg. Wright posted five points (1-4-5) and six PIM in 22 games with the Norfolk Admirals prior to the trade. The Saskatoon, Sask. native has played in 49 NHL games over his career, all with Tampa Bay (2009-2011) recording five points (2-3-5). Drafted in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by Tampa Bay, Wright has posted 80 points (28-52-80) in 156 games career AHL contests.
Caruso, 24, played in 68 games with San Antonio last season, registering 13 points (5-8-13) and 63 PIM. He appeared in 10 playoffs games notching four assists. For his professional career, Caruso has played in 283 AHL contests with Rochester (2008-10) and San Antonio scoring 12 goals with 31 assists. The Mississauga, Ont. native was drafted by Florida in the fourth round (103rd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Foster, 25, made his NHL debut on Feb. 4, playing five minutes at Tampa Bay making one save. He also played in 12 games with San Antonio (AHL), going 4-6-0 with a 3.64 GAA and 29 games with the Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL) going 16-11-2 with a 2.78 GAA. The Pembroke, N.H., native was drafted by Florida in the fifth round (161st overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

The top line of Fleischmann, Versteeg, and Weiss should stuck around, andd the second line looks to be Huberdeau, Mueller, and maybe Upshall. However, a guy like Semin or Doan could easily slide into Scottie’s slot for a more potent offensive presence.

This year’s sleeper for Tallon and the Florida Panthers may be forward Peter Mueller who was signed for one year at $1.75 million. An original first round (6th overall) pick in 2006 by the Phoenix Coyotes, Mueller is a winger who can play on either the right side or the left side, and has quickness, and a good shot. He played 32 games for the Colorado Avalanche last season with 7 goals and 19 assists. His time was limited due to injuries.
