The Panthers sent goalie Michael Houser and forward Quinton Howden to San Antonio. They also placed forward Bobby Butler on waivers.
The roster contains 22 healthy bodies, including forward Brad Boyes and defenseman Tom Gilbert, veterans on performance tryouts who Tallon indicated would be signed this weekend.

"It felt good for being the first time in a game-like atmosphere for 15 months," Thomas told the Miami Herald. "I think it was a necessary step for me. I thought it was good not to wait. We're running out of preseason games. I feel ready now."
"I think this is exciting," Panthers goalie coach Robb Tallas told the Miami Herald. "… He makes big saves at the right time. The players here are excited about that."
Beyond his resume, the Panthers hope Thomas can serve as a role model to the team's younger players.
"He battles on every shot, every drill," general manager Dale Tallon said. "This is great for our team, great for him and great for our goalies."
Scott Clemmensen also is on the roster, but still recovering from a knee injury sustained during training camp.
When healthy Clemmensen will go through a conditioning stint in the American Hockey League, but at some point the Panthers are going to have to pick two goalies to keep in Florida. However, Tallon said it will be an open competition, with the best pair sticking.
"We want the best goalies," Tallon said. "Inner competition is great for the success of a team. Let them battle it out."

The Panthers have signed goaltender Tim Thomas to a one-year contract with a base salary of $2.5 million and performance and games played bonuses up to $3.75 million.
The 39-year old Thomas was drafted 217th overall in the ninth round of the 1994 draft by the Quebec Nordiques.

Florida Panthers Executive VP/General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that former Panther John Madden has joined the organization as a pro Scout.
“We are thrilled to have John join our scouting staff,” said Tallon. “He is a three-time Stanley Cup winner and brings to our organization a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game.”
Throughout his 13-year playing career, Madden played for the New Jersey Devils (1998-2004 & 2005-2009), Chicago Blackhawks (2009-2010), Minnesota Wild (2010-2011) and Florida Panthers (2011-2012), earning three Stanley Cup titles (New Jersey 2000 & 2003) and Chicago (2010).
The Toronto, Ontario native played in 898 career NHL games, recording 348 points (165-183-348) and 219 PIMs. Madden played in 31 games for Florida, helping the Cats win the Southeast Division Championship. He was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2001.

Tim Thomas officially signs a one-year contract with the Panthers. The 39-year old has played in 378 NHL contests. The 4-time All-Star has also won two Vezinas, a Conn Smythe and a Stanley Cup.

Florida Panthers forward Kris Versteeg has been medically cleared to return to game action for the first time since tearing his ACL in March.
He rehabbed extensively during the summer.
"I've talked to a lot of guys who have had it done like [Tomas] Kopecky and [Scottie] Upshall, you just trust their opinion, more so you got to trust your doctor, trust your surgeon what he did to you is going to make you better first, and understand that and go through your physical therapy," Versteeg told the Florida Sun-Sentinel. "The staff here in Florida did a tremendous job with me the first two months, then I went home [to Lethrbridge, Alberta] and worked with a guy named Tim back home and my own trainer and they got me to where I am today."
Versteeg was third on the Panthers with 54 points in 2011-12, helping Florida win the Southeast Division title and make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2000. He tore up his knee against Tampa Bay on March 12 and underwent surgery. He's scheduled to play Thursday night against the Lightning.
The Panthers need him to help rebound from a 2012-13 season that saw them finish last in the overall standings.
"It's definitely a lot of commitment," Versteeg told the paper. "I'm excited to what I can do this year."
Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau is also expected to make his preseason debut for the Panthers on Thursday.

There is no guarantee that Panthers Ed Jovanovski will play another game after his major hip surgery. He has been rehabbing and skating all off-season, but there is still uncertainty regarding his future.
“I’ve been feeling pretty good. It’s almost like I’ll feel comfortable to play in a game when I have that thought. There’s no pressure from anyone on the outside,’’ Jovanovski said Thursday after skating with the team on the first day of training camp.
“I do want to play again and that’s in my mind. I’ll do everything I can to play again.’’

Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon confirmed Wednesday morning he had "inquired" about bringing veteran goalies Tim Thomas, Ilya Bryzgalov and Jose Theodore to training camp on a tryout basis.
Tallon said he had not yet gotten a positive response from any of the three.

According to CBS Sports Andy Strickland, veteran forward Brad Boyes will be joining the Florida Panthers for training camp in hopes of landing a job with the club.
Last year, Boyes signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders and enjoyed a nice bounce-back season, scoring 10 goals and 35 assists while playing in all 48 games. The 31-year-old decided to bypass attending camp with the Islanders this season and is heading south to Sunrise instead.
Boyes, who was drafted 24th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2000, has appeared in 606 NHL games and scored 168 times while adding 239 assists for a total of 407 points. He scored a career-high 43 goals for St. Louis in 2007-08 and followed that up with a career-best 72 points for the Blues the following season.
The Panthers are thin at the right wing position and could probably use more of a veteran presence, so a solid camp for Boyes could easily lead to a contract. If Boyes can come close to equaling his numbers from last year, or better yet, turn back the clock to his scoring prime then this could be a pretty sweet move by Tallon, Inc.

General manager Dale Tallon said Sunday that Scott Clemmensen had minor knee surgery last week and will miss the first three weeks of camp. The Panthers have their first practice Thursday morning in Coral Springs.
Clemmensen is projected to be the backup to 23-year-old Jacob Markstrom when the season starts. Tallon said Clemmensen should be back for the season opener Oct. 3 in Dallas. Michael Houser, 20, is currently second on Florida's depth chart with Clemmensen out.
