Former Blues enforcer and current broadcaster Kelly Chase had some harsh words this morning for the team's lack of response to San Jose's Joe Thornton Saturday night.

Thornton returned to town with the Sharks, six weeks after he leveled Blues forward David Perron on a questionable hit. In that game, on Nov. 4, Thornton received a game-misconduct, and the next day he was hit with a two-game suspension.

But when he returned Saturday, there was no response from the Blues, and in an interview with "The ITD Morning After" on 590 THE FAN KFNS, Chase said that it was embarrassing.

"The game against the Sharks the other night really bothered me," Chase told hosts Tim McKernan and Jim Hayes. "David Perron gets knocked out by Joe Thornton, and we didn't respond. It's been a long time since I could say that about a Blues team. If there's guys in there that are looking to be leaders, and are looking to be captains ... we hear about these young guys, they're stepping up, they're stepping up ... well they didn't step up the other night.

"Joe Thornton came to St. Louis prepared to fight, at least be confronted by one of the guys over their teammate ... not one guy responded ... not one guy went and said one thing to Joe Thornton.

"It can't continually be Cam Janssen, Brad Winchester and B.J. Crombeen that step up all the time. Some of these guys have to do some things that are out of their character. And to me, I was embarrassed to be honest with you. I was sitting between the benches for two periods expecting some kind of ... if you're a teammate, you've got to go out and confront Joe Thornton. If it's only verbally, you have to make him feel uncomfortable. The San Jose Sharks came in prepared to have that happen, and the St. Louis Blues did NOTHING, and it was embarrassing."

There were three fights in the first period, but none involved Thornton and none were in response to the Thornton hit on Perron. Because the Blues didn't respond, Chase said one of two things happened.

"Either they don't get it, and know that they should respond to the guy, or they don't like David Perron, and either way that's a problem," he said.

The day before the game, the Blues had indicated in a story on STLtoday.com (click here to read) that they had moved past the Thornton hit on Perron. Chase admitted that players may have been told by the coaching staff to focus on playing the game and not worry about Thornton.

"I'm sure (Blues coach Davis Payne) said, 'Hey, we still gotta think about the two points,'" Chase said. "That message means the coach is covering his rear end saying, 'Listen, we'll kill off the good penalties and don't take bad ones. Don't go do something stupid.' But at the end of the day, I'm not looking for Thornton to be grabbed and beaten. I'm talking about a guy just confronting him so that the kid (Perron) sitting watching the game with a concussion knows, hey, you got his back, and also the rest of the team responds and goes, we're going to rally around that. That's what I'm talking about. That's how you play the game.

"...Right now, you look at the Philadelphia Flyers ... they're nasty, in your face. They score a whole bunch of goals, but I'll tell you right now, that never would have happened in Philadelphia. They wouldn't allow it to happen. And if it didn't happen, the leaders, they'd get lit up. And I'm sure the coach (Payne) isn't happy with what went on."

Chase also pointed out that the Blues didn't respond to Devin Setoguchi elbowing Carlo Colaiacovo in the head. Colaiacovo left the game for a period and later returned.

"Colaiacovo got blasted right in the face," Chase said. "I was right there. He got blasted. Shoulder and elbow right in the face. No one responded. You can't tell guys to do it. You either know it, or you don't. And if you don't know, learn, and if you're not going to learn, you're going to be replaced. Because you can't win like that. At the end of the day, that's what it comes down to."

Chase said that he's not the only one who was upset. Several former players commented to him that they were disappointed, and he pointed out that fans at the game Saturday also showed their frustration.

"I was so (ticked) off watching the game, I couldn't even sit down after the third period," Chase said. "Listen, don't give me that (bleep) about it's the new and the old (NHL players) because whether you think that people notice or not, you're wrong. When the St. Louis Blues fans come out and boo for a period and a half every time (Thornton) touches the puck, and you don't respond, then they quit booing because they're like 'Geez, if these guys don't care, what do we care?' That's what happened in that game. The fans went there anticipating that somebody was going to step up. If you just go get in (Thornton's) face for one period, you don't ever have to buy a beer again in St. Louis. This guy cares, and it didn't look like they cared.

"... That bothered me, I'm telling you, that bothered me because 22 years of being around here with the jersey and stuff, stick up for yourself ... stick up for the jersey and think about the rest of the guys that did."
