The Washington Capitals have signed forward Jacob Micflikier to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Micflikier, 27, recorded 61 points (29 goals, 32 assists) and 80 penalty minutes in 78 games last season with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native finished second on the team in goals and third in points. In addition, Micflikier appeared in 14 playoff games, collecting three points and six penalty minutes. In 193 career AHL games with Springfield, Rochester, Albany and Charlotte, Micflikier has registered 126 points (55 goals, 71 assists) and 126 penalty minutes.
The 5’8”, 180-pound forward has played 55 career ECHL games with Stockton and Florida, recording 93 points (29 goals, 64 assists) and 65 penalty minutes. In 12 career Kelly Cup playoff games with Stockton and Florida, he collected 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) and 18 penalty minutes.
Micflikier played four seasons at the University of New Hampshire, registering 150 points (58 goals, 92 assists) and 157 penalty minutes in 154 career games. Micflikier, who was named as an assistant captain in his senior year, helped UNH win the 2007 Hockey East regular season title. In his junior season, he was named UNH’s Most Valuable Player and led the team in scoring with 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists). Micflikier currently ranks 24th on the all-time scoring list at UNH.
“I don’t know if it’s stupidity or what, but I think that’s part of just who I am as a person and as a teammate,” Mitchell said on Wednesday. “It’s the best feeling in the world when you know somebody’s got your back. It’s not about going out and beating the toughest guy but showing that you have a commitment to take care of your team, to go do something.”
Flemmingről:
“He really is a throwback type of player,” French said. “He’s very willing to engage physically and wins a lot of battles along the boards.
“He’s one guy I’m very excited about having in Hershey because he’s got real good leadership qualities,” French continued, “a real good work ethic and he’s just a real solid person to have in the room -- in addition to his play.”
Ha ez így van, örülnék neki ha minél hamarabb beérne, kell ilyen playa is.
“I know it’s a blind side, but if it’s a hit, it’s a hit. I’m a pretty dirty player…like [Pittsburgh’s] Matt Cooke,” Paquette said. “So I did my job. Usually people come at me and try to fight, but no one came, so it’s OK.”
Karl Alzner’s agent J.P. Barry said in an email Thursday that he is still negotiating with the Capitals and expects to continue discussions about a new contract for the young defenseman with assistant general manager Don Fishman.
Team B defeated Team A, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon with goals by Caleb Herbert, Stanislav Galiev, Travis Boyd and Aaron Schmit, while Andrew Cherniwchan and Garrett Mitchell scored for the losing side. There wasn’t any hesitation among the players looking to prove themselves, either, when it came to showing a willingness to play with that physical edge.
“There was a lot more physical contact than in the last two development camps, at least early on for the first game,” Boudreau said. “I don’t wanna start saying [that] some guys are great, other guys are struggling. Overall, the older guys looked a little more mature than some of the younger guys. What I mean by that is they didn’t look as nervous, the guys that had been to this camp before. They’ve gotten better every day. I expect them to be even better tomorrow, and then by Saturday it should be a very good game.”
“Mattias is a little bit older, he’s stronger, he’s a big guy,” Eakin said. “So I kind of had to adjust my game a little bit in the zone and in the faceoff circles and it took a little bit to adjust, but I think after a while it was a little back and forth.”
“I’m not nervous like last year, because last year I just get drafted and it was my first camp and I was nervous a lot,” said Galiev, a third-round 2010 draft pick who will likely rejoin Saint John for another season this fall. “I didn’t know coaches, guys in the locker room -- I was a little shy last year, but this year, I’m just excited to be here again.
“I just want to show how I’ve improved since last year,” Galiev added. “I feel I get bigger, more start to play physical and play smarter in the D zone and the neutral zone.”

The Capitals announced Wednesday that they’ve signed center Mathieu Perreault to a one-year, two-way deal.
Perreault, 23, played a career-high 35 NHL games with the Capitals during the 2010-11 regular season, recording seven goals and seven assists during that span. The quick-footed yet undersized Perreault (5-10, 174) regularly made an impact any time he was recalled to Washington last season but continued to struggle with consistency during those stints.
In Hershey last year, Perreault posted 11 goals and 35 points in 34 AHL regular season games.
Earlier this week at Capitals’ development camp, Coach Bruce Boudreau said he anticipated that Perreault would likely compete with Mattias Sjogren and Cody Eakin for a spot on the NHL roster this season when asked about the latter’s chances about sticking in Washington.
Eakin’s “in tough in that group too. You’ve got Mattias Sjogren, the same thing, and Mathieu Perreault im sure wants full time work in this situation,” Boudreau said. “So it will make an interesting battle in training camp. It will make an interesting battle in training camp.”
