Sean Avery's return to Madison Square Garden on Monday night was relatively uneventful, on the ice.

But off of it, Avery got into a heated altercation with MSG television host John Giannone between the first and second periods.

According to a report in New York Newsday, eyewitnesses confirmed the profanity-laced confrontation that occurred near the officials' room when Avery emerged from the Stars locker room and unleashed a barrage of obscenities at Giannone.

When Avery reportedly made a remark about Giannone's wife, the broadcaster fired back.

The dispute cooled down, according to the newspaper, when the officials emerged from the room and Avery headed toward the ice.

''There was a verbal exchange between the two last night,'' an MSG spokesman told Newsday. ''It's over and we won't have any further comment.''

The league is not expected to discipline Avery.
