What they need: What doesn’t Colorado need? The Avs endured their worst season ever in Denver, lost 45 games, finished last in the West, and fired everybody. They need way more grit among their forwards – Darcy Tucker just doesn’t bring it often enough anymore. Apart from Paul Stastny, Colorado’s best players are old: Joe Sakic (39), Ryan Smyth (33, with a lot of miles on the odometer), Milan Hejduk (33), Ian Laperriere (35), Adam Foote (37), Ruslan Salei (34). And, oh yeah: If Colorado doesn’t find a Grade A goalie, nothing else they do will matter. They’ll still miss the playoffs.
What they might do: They’ll sign Sakic for another year out of respect and the fact there is room in this lineup, even for an ageing superstar. They should hang on to UFA Ian Laperriere, jettison Tyler Arnason, forget about UFA Daniel Tjarnqvist, and if they’re smart, resist any urge to bring UFA Alex Tanguay back. They need a goaltender desperately, and should I.D. a Tuukka Rask (Boston) or Cory Schneider (Vancouver), trade for him and play him 65 games this season."
