While goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere surrendered all four Edmonton goals before the empty-netter, on only seven shots, he had plenty of company in putting the Ducks behind the 8-ball. Defensive-zone turnovers by Perry, Teemu Selanne and rookie defenseman Brendan Mikkelson led directly to Oilers goals, with the other coming on the power play after a tripping penalty against Ducks center Petteri Nokelainen.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle took the unusual measure of inserting Jonas Hiller in Giguere’s place after Edmonton’s first two goals, then putting Giguere back in the game after a mere two-second shift.

“I did it for the simple reason of trying to stop what was going on in a minute and a half out there,” Carlyle said. “I figured it would just settle things down, and it did.”

Giguere left for good after Brodziak took advantage of a Mikkelson giveaway to score from near the top of the left-wing faceoff circle.

“I’m not going to beat myself up about it,” Giguere said. “Tomorrow is going to be a new day. We just talked about it. Randy just talked about it. You’re not going to win then all. That’s just the bottom line. You need to be able to deal with losses and deal with wins. I think we have enough character and experience to know that. I’m sure we’ll be fine.”
