Yesterday Lupul said, “I’m feeling good. There are definitely some positive steps. It hasn’t gone the way I anticipated originally but that’s kind of the risk you take when you have a surgery like that. Things are moving very slowly, but I’m headed in the right direction. I’m still positive I can play sometime this year.”

Lupul said he has been on an IV and antibiotics twice a day and is so far only able to walk to rehab his back. He said treating the blood infection is the top priority before he can begin further recovery on the back. “Hopefully in the next couple of weeks they can start a little more rehab,” the 26-year-old said. “It’s not going to happen overnight, but hopefully I can get back and try to help this team make the playoffs.

“It’s been unpredictable, to say the least. I went and got the surgery and after the first surgery something kind of went wrong. There was some fluid that had hardened and set right in the nerves. They had to go in and do a second procedure to get that out of there. From there, I developed a blood infection from the surgery. That’s something you definitely can’t mess around with, because a blood infection can have serious consequences. I’ve had to take care of that first, and then go into rehab and keep progressing. If things keep going the way they should, I’ll definitely be back this year.”
